EQUINE INNOVATIONS
EQUINE INNOVATIONS
Founded in 2016, Equine Innovations is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Forest Lake, MN.
MISSION
To provide equine- assisted activities that facilitate communication, physical, emotional and cognitive growth for children and adults with special needs, specially autism.
HOW DO WE DO THIS?
Our clients began the process of traditional equine therapeutic riding and learning the skills associated with such, prior to participating in our program. With the comprehensive ability to follow more detailed direction, even if they cannot communicate very directly, our clients are ready to begin the next step in their horsemanship and riding skills by participating in very specific teaching to help them independently be able to walk, trot, canter and execute multi-step patterns.
Through adaptive group and private lessons, our focus improves verbal and non-verbal communication skills, core physical strength and coordination, along with emotional resilience.
WHY DO WE DO THIS?
Equine Innovations desires not only to further develop communication, physical, emotional and cognitive skills, but to expand horsemanship and riding skills, all of which positively impact overall life skills. Our equine therapy is provided free of charge or at a very low cost to clients.
RIDING THERAPY TRAINER
Jenny Berhow provides a majority of the individualized lessons, but also works through volunteers when she is handling other programming.
ACCREDATIONS
Equine Innovations is EAGALA certified (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association)

THIS OLD HORSE
Founded in 2012, This Old Horse is a private, volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit.
MISSION
To support and serve horses of all breeds and disciplines while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of “horse power” in the lives of people.
HOW DO WE DO THIS?
By finding “happily ever after” for horses in transition from hardship to healing and from career to retirement
By revering and respecting those who have served us well. As these horses age, time and effort take their toll, and they are no longer capable of full-time work. Often their owners or handlers must move them out to make room for more able-bodied replacements.
WHY DO WE DO THIS?
We give horses a safe harbor for life where they may age in place, loved, honored and respected to the end or move on to a happily ever after in a loving new home.
VOLUNTEER-BASED MODEL
We have a volunteer-based model with no paid administrative staff. Our leaders and key employees are volunteers, along with nearly 3000 community members who have joined our mission since we started.
ACCREDATIONS, AWARDS AMD CERTIFICATIONS
This Old Horse has been accredited, awarded, and certified by many major equine welfare organizations, empirically and objectively demonstrating our high standards of equine care and support as well as management, fiscal and administrative excellence.
Most notably, we are the only Minnesota organization with facilities accredited by:
– The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS)
– The Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA)
– The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA).
We have been awarded and lauded as a national model for innovation in equine adoption strategies. Our adoption rates are remarkable by any standard and exceptional considering we are specialists in supporting unrideable, special needs and older horses.
